Some changes to HPV vaccination in schools for 9-14 year olds have recently come into force
Previously, 9-14 year olds would be offered two doses of the HPV vaccine through the School Based Immunisation Programme to complete their HPV immunisation course.
The School Based Immunisation Programme will now be offering a single dose only of the HPV vaccine for 9-14 year olds, in line with recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO). This recommendation is based on international evidence which shows that a single dose provides very similar protection to two doses for this age group when vaccine coverage is high.
What this means for immunisations in school
9-14 year old tamariki and rangatahi who have not yet received any HPV vaccinations will now be offered a single dose only of the HPV vaccine as part of the School Based Immunisation Programme.
They will continue to also be offered a tetanus/diphtheria/whooping cough booster vaccination as well as catch-up measles/mumps/rubella vaccinations (if needed).
Can your tamaiti (child) still get a 2nd dose of the HPV vaccine?
Yes - but not in school.
While a single dose is now understood to provide a high level of protection, your tamaiti can still receive a free 2nd dose of the HPV vaccine if you would like them to. A 2nd dose is available here at The Terrace Medical Centre, with some pharmacies, and with some other community providers. This dose is usually given at least 6 months after the 1st dose.
