Diabetes scam in social media

We have been alerted to a diabetes-related scam going around social media at the moment.

These scam posts may include deepfake (fake, digitally altered) images and videos of diabetes expert Professor Rinki Murphy.

Scammers are trying to use the reputation of this diabetes expert to convince people to send money for various scam products claimed to "cure" diabetes or to lose weight.

DON'T . . .

  • Make changes to your diabetes treatment without consulting with your doctor or Nurse Practitioner

  • Stop taking any of your diabetes medications without consulting with your doctor or Nurse Practitioner

  • Provide money or bank account details for "diabetes treatment" products online

DO . . .

  • Be on the alert for red flag phrases similar to these, which indicate a scam:

    • "buy this 5 second method"

    • "take this cure for 27 days"

    • "these pills are NOT sold in pharmacies"

    • "click here to find out more"

  • Check in with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your diabetes treatment

  • Only use reliable and trustworthy sources for health information, e.g. your doctor, nurse, and pharmacist, and websites such as Te Whatu Ora and Healthify

Stay safe!
