What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is not a registered nurse/practice nurse

In short, a Mātanga Tapuhi/Nurse Practitioner is an expert nurse with advanced education and clinical training.

Our Nurse Practitioner, Jasper, is qualified to practice beyond the level of a registered nurse/practice nurse, and he can provide a wide range of assessment and treatment interventions.

Essentially, you can see him for many of the concerns you would usually see a GP for, as he is able to:

  • Assess symptoms

  • Diagnose conditions

  • Prescribe medications

  • Order and explain tests

  • Send referrals to specialists

  • Provide ongoing care

Please book with Jasper the same way you would book with a GP! You can arrange appointments with him either through the Well portal or by calling reception.

Please don't book with Jasper for the following...

You may have seen Jasper previously in his role as a practice nurse, but now that he is a qualified Nurse Practitioner he is no longer able to see you for practice nurse services, which include:

  • Vaccinations/immunisations

  • Injections (e.g. B12, testosterone, Depo Provera, etc.)

  • Removal of sutures/staples

  • ECGs

  • Blood pressure series

  • CVRAs

  • Ear suctioning

  • Diabetic Annual Reviews

  • Infusions (e.g. Aclasta, Ferinject)

For these services, please call reception to book with a practice nurse instead.
